10/28/2013 – Is there much difference between using flaked oats and flaked barley for adding body to a beer?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: They will both add body, but have quite different flavors. I would use flaked oats in a stout, and flaked barley in a porter for example.

Cool and dry conditions are best.From a practal standpoint, grains can be stored uncrushed, in unopened bags for a year or maybe even more at room temperature. Response From Homebrew Heaven: Best "table" I know of is our website categories. We put grains that need to be mashed in our "Brewing Grains" category, and those that only require steeping into our "Specialty Grains" category.
5/15/2007 – Awhile back, I asked about getting a recipe from you which provided a "grainy" aftertaste, and was told to try your flaked barley, and to mash it with 2 or 6-row malted barley. I am ready to try, but my question is, does the flaked barley have to be mashed in order to provide this flavor? Can't it just be treated as a specialty grain and . . .
Response From Homebrew Heaven: It needs to be mashed with the grains as described. Without mashing, it will just provide starches, not sugars or the same flavors. It will also leave your beer hazy.
3/14/2007 – How long will cracked grains keep before their quality begins to diminish? For example, if I purchase them from you on Sunday, can I expect them to be perfectly fine to use the following Sunday? (I have some travel to do leading up to a brew day.)
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Much longer than that, provided they are kept dry. Some breweries actually crush their grain weeks, or even months ahead of when they need it.
1/9/2007 – At what point do I add the flaked barley? As I steep, or once it's boiling?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Flaked barley needs to be mashed with other grains like 6-row to extract any sugars. Usually, this is only used in all-grain batches. If you don't it will leave some cloudiness, and starch, similar to oatmeal.
