11/17/2006 -- Hi, I am new to homebrewing, and I was wondering if different varieties of hops are used in the same batch of beer, or if it is just customary to use one type of hop (e.g. pacific gem) per batch of homebrew. Furthermore, where can I find some sort of list or book that outlines the different types of hops and what types of beer they are used in?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Yes, quite often 2 (or more) hop varieties are used in a batch of beer. Bittering hops (beginning of the boil) have different characteristics than hops used at the end of the boil (for flavor and aroma).
Here is a good reference on hop usage for you:

Take a look around!
8/14/2005 -- I am fortunate enough to be growing 2 types of hops that were given to me, Hallertauer and Cascade.
Questions:
1) Is it possible to have these 2 varieties cross breed/pollinate?
2) When comparing leaf hops to pellets do you get the same weights IE...
1 oz pellets 1 oz leaf are they equal?
3) I dry these out in a dehydrator and vaccum seal them and freeze. Should I use another method?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: 1) No. Not unless you have a male, and they are only maintained for cross-breeding purposes from major hop growers. I am certain that yours are female...that's all that is available.
2) There is about a 10% difference between using leaf and pellet forms. The pellets are about 10% "stronger", so you would use about 10% less (by weight).
3) That will certainly work. I like to just freeze them whole (without drying) but that takes up a lot of space in the freezer. If you do it THAT way, use about 8 times MORE (by weight) because of the water (weight) left in the flowers.
6/15/2003 -- Do you have any vacuumed packed leaf hops (air tight)?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Yes! All of our leaf hops are vacuum packed to ensure freshness.
