11/10/2012 – Why does the packet say not to use an airlock? what happens if i use one?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: This is due to the very fast fermentation that can occur with this yeast. It is very active, and if your fermenter isn't large enough to contain the foaming, it will continue right on thru the airlock. There is no problem with using an airlock really, provided you allow for this foaming.

5/8/2008 – what would be the best yeast for producing ethanol alcohol fuel using sugar and a beer keg pot still?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: I would go with the Super Start Distiller's Yeast. Very inexpensive, and taste isn't a factor. Don't forget to use some nutrients also, however.Another alternative is one of the Turbo yeasts. They contain the nutrient and work very fast.
3/3/2008 – 2 questions. do I have to use corn with a turbo yeast or can I just use sugar for fermentation? second, Can I use cornmeal from a grocery store to make small batches?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Turbo yeast is designed to be used with plain sugar. Let's first clarify things in order to answer your second question...Cornmeal is not fermentable. It is just crushed corn. It has no free sugar, and therefor is not fermentable by itself. Corn SUGAR is, but you will not find it at grocery stores. We have it if you need it.

12/29/2007 – On the packets (24 & 48hr turbo) it states not to use an airlock, why is this? question 2we have our first 24hr turbo wash nicely fizzing away, with just a cloth over the top, is this the way to do it.?every other time we brew, we use an air lock and let the product bubble for several days, have been using the 48hr turbo for some time. . . .
Response From Homebrew Heaven: G'day!Those yeasts recommend leaving the lid off (like you have done) because it is know to create extreme fermentation, that can overflow a container with an airlock.You're not missing anything. Drive on!
7/9/2007 – Have you heard of someone using turbo yeasts for home-brew beer? I was wondering if thats advisable, if one didnt intend to distill such a mash, just ferment it. Would there be any byproducts that might effect taste?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: It's a bad idea. The turbo yeasts are typically loaded with nutrients for fermenting sugar washes. Beer has plenty of nutrients already, so you would be adding in more than is necessary. Could very well lead to off-flavors. Also expense.
5/11/2007 – If you do not distill after fermenting with this product do you have to filter the alcohol for fusel or any other hazardous chemicals?Depending on what you are fermenting, TASTE would be the issue.
Response From Homebrew Heaven: No, assuming that you ferment at a reasonable temperature. Too high of a temperature will create fusels that taste bad, but are certainly not hazardous.

7/28/2006 – Does your activated stone carbon need to be washed with water before using it to filter alcohol? If so, what is the procedure?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: It is more effective if you do. A good way is to put it into a tube with something like a coffee filter on the end to hold the carbon. A rubber band will do to hold it in place. Start pouring a little water into the tube. It will bubble at first, and then be absorbed by the carbon. Keep doing this until water trickles out the end of the tube. . . .
3/16/2006 – What, if any, are the consequences of letting the mash with the added 24 hour turbo sit for more then 24 hours? Also, how long would the distillation of 5gal of rye mash take?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: No consequences at all for letting it sit more than 24 hours. 24 MONTHS would probably be too long.How long it takes for the distillation of a particular batch depends very much on the equipment used, heat source, desired proof and probably 20 other factors. Most systems, under normal conditions, take perhaps 4 hours however.
3/10/2006 – Does this yeast include yeast nutrients, or do you have to add them?

I have to know, Is it possible to distill with a corn wash and maybe "filter" the finished product through charcoal and then maybe let this sit in charred oak chips to give it a whiskeyish flavor ? Response From Homebrew Heaven: Where it is legal to do so...yes, your can distill a corn wash, filter and flavor with oak. That has been done.You are also correct about doing an all-grain fermentation without hops and distilling to produce whiskey. Again, the legality of that depends on many factors. If you are after maximum alcohol content (this is not always the desired product!) temperature is typically maintained at 172-178 deg F. 4/30/2004 – What is the quantity of one bag of Turbo Yeast? Im curious as I understand that the mix is 8kgs of sugar in a 25 liter container but what is the quantity of one packet of turbo yeast?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Each packet has about 6 oz. of yeast and nutrients. Instructions:Pour 21 liters (5.5 gallons) of 40 deg. C (140 deg F.) water into your fermenter. Add 6 kg (13.2 lbs) of sugar and mix well. Add one package of Alcotec 24 and stir for one minute. Leave to ferment at 20-30 deg C (68-86 deg F.). Optimum is 25 deg C. (77 deg F.)
3/6/2004 – I have "Compleat Distiller" on my shopping list for general purposes. Do you know if this book covers the use of potatoes (versus grains) as the base for the fermentation stage, or do I need to search for additional "informational" materials?Thanks.
Response From Homebrew Heaven: This book is an excellent resource for the distillation part of the process, but it is a little "lean" on the fermentation portion. The Alaska Bootleggers Bible actually has better information on using potatoes, and even has a recipe for potato "wine".
2/28/2004 – Is it illegal to produce ethanol for a use other than human consumption?
Response From Homebrew Heaven: It depends on where you live, but in general, it is not illegal to produce ethanol for use as a fuel, for instance. A permit, however, may be required. The Feds even offer tax credits for producing alcohol as alternative fuel.We are not lawyers of course, and you should always be sure of your own legal position.

12/3/2003 – I can't drink alcohol. Is it possible to remove most of the alcohol of a liquor like Tequila and somehow maintain the flavor by evaporation or any other means? (So that N.A. Margaritas can be made)
Response From Homebrew Heaven: Not really, BUT...we have alcohol flavorings (essences) that are normally added to vodka to make them into rum, tequila, whiskey etc that should work just fine. They contain no alcohol themselves, and a very small amount can be added to make N.A. drinks.
